Frequently Asked Questions
How do I become a member?
Membership of the group is free. To join please send an email to the group organiser at the address shown on the Contact Us page.
How do I get more information about the walks?
A calendar of walks is prepared every few months with dates and approximate locations. An email is sent to all group members a week or so before each walk takes place giving the start time, distance, meeting place, an outline of the route and a contact number for the walk leader.
Can I just turn up?
It is helpful if you contact the walk leader before the walk to let them know you are planning to be there. In the unlikely event that the walk is cancelled at short notice you can then be contacted to prevent a wasted journey.
Do I need expensive clothing or equipment?
No but comfortable, waterproof walking boots are recommended for all walks. They provide more ankle support and are usually more waterproof than trainers. Even when it isn't raining the grass can be wet and the paths muddy. It is advisable to also have a waterproof jacket and over trousers. A small rucksack is useful for carrying a packed lunch, drink, spare clothing etc. Jeans are not really suitable for walking in.
In winter it is a good idea to carry hats, gloves and extra layers to put on and in summer you should carry plenty of water and suncream.
Who leads the walks?
Any group member can volunteer to lead a walk. It is a good idea to have a little map reading knowledge and to have done a trial run of the route beforehand.
Can I bring a dog?
Our walks tend to be dog free. If you are planning to bring a dog please check beforehand with the walk leader and don’t just turn up on the day. Some walks will have several stiles where a dog would have to be lifted over, or fields of livestock where they must be kept on a close lead. On walks, dogs are entirely the responsibility of the owner so make sure you are familiar with the countryside code in regards to walking with dogs.
What if I have an accident whilst on a walk?
The group is informal, walk leaders are volunteers and everyone walks at their own risk. The group or walk leaders are not liable for any injury, accident or loss sustained at an event organised by the group.
